Early Edition live at Edinburgh
biography

Marcus began his comedy career at Bristol University, studying Drama and won the BBC New Comedian of the year in 1996. He has since emerged as a major comedy, writing and acting talent, regularly appearing live and on TV, film and Radio.

The Edinburgh festival has delivered a great deal of critical acclaim for Marcus over the years. In 2006 he previewed his sell out national tour, which went on to become the top selling DVD 'Planet Corduroy'. 2005 saw the start of BBC 4šs The Late Edition - Marcus's own topical show recording over 50 live programs over several years. This show now tours as the Early Edition and is an ongoing festival favorite.

TV appearances also include 'Live from the Apollo', 'Have I Got News For You' as both host and panelist on several occasions, 'The A-Z of Music', 'News-Knight' with Sir Trevor McDonald, 'QI', 'Would I Lie to You?', 'Question Time', 'Marcus Brigstocke's Trophy People', 'Saturday Night Live ...Again', and 'Argumental'. In 2006 Marcus spent time in France for 'Excuse My French' in which he had 4 weeks to learn the language, almost from scratch, then perform stand up in French to audiences in Marseille and Paris. More recently he has successfully transferred 'Išve Never Seen Star Wars' from Radio 4 to TV.

His acting work includes playing the lead character Adam Savage in Simon Nye's BBC 1 sitcom 'The Savages', and another leading role in BBC3's 'Vacant Possession', (Twisted Tales). Not to mention the brilliant self-promoting TV Historian David Oxley (BA Hons) in 'We Are History', a cult success that bought him to the attention of many an adoring fan and almost as many dismayed archaeologists.

Radio 4 has become a second home for Marcus. He is the regular angry young man on The (Sony Award winning) Now Show with Punt and Dennis. He has written and recorded many series and 'specials' of 'Giles Wemmbley-Hogg Goes Off' with new Wemmbley-Hogg adventures on the way in 2009. He created 3 series of 'The Museum Of Everything' with long time writing and performing friends Danny Robins and Dan Tetsell. He played the head of consultancy firm - Unthinkable Solutions as Ryan Packer in 'Think The Unthinkable'. Other recordings include 'Just a Minute', 'Newsquiz', The Today Program, 'The Unbelievable Truth', '2000 years of Radio', 'A funny thing happened on the way to the dispatch box' and the wonderfully silly '99p Challenge'. On the big screen he has appeared in Richard Curtis' movie 'Love Actually' as a Radio DJ interviewing the hilariously jaded Billy Mack (Bill Nighy). He went to Berlin with Kevin Spacey to film 'Beyond The Sea' - the life story of Bobby Darin. In Piccadilly Jim Marcus appears with Sam Rockwell and Tom Wilkinson as 'man having sex under stairs', a small but vital role and has recently filmed with Nick Moran in the forthcoming 'Telstar'. He also played a desperately ambitious yet woefully inept arts presenter in Neil Gaiman's 'A Short Film About John Bolton'.

In 2007 and 2008 Marcus traveled to the Arctic with Cape Farewell to see for himself the effects of climate change, working with a team of scientists to discover the pace of change and discuss the impacts of Global Warming and how to lessen them. The first voyage sailed 1300 miles from Norway along the 78th parallel to the East coast of Greenland and was terrifying, particularly when he found himself in the water with Polar Bear. The 2008 voyage was a journey up the East coast, researching, exploring and spending time getting to know the Inuit people of Greenland. This second trip was easier on a larger Russian research vessel with a 30 strong group of scientists, thinkers, activists, artists and musicians including KT Tunstal, Jarvis Cocker and Martha Wainwright.

Marcus now lives in South London, happily married to his university sweetheart, with two children and may well be the proudest dad in the world. He is committed to non-violence and is an active campaigner for environmental awareness and action as well as his ongoing involvement with Cape Farewell, War on Want and the 'Campaign Against Arms Trade'.

Marcus is very proud that he accidentally had a #11 chart smash with DJ Dee-Kline's, 'Don't Smoke Da Reefa' and without wishing to scrape the barrel further it may be worth mentioning that Marcus very briefly worked as a podium dancer, and also on an oil-rig in the North Sea (although not as a dancer). He is fanatical about snowboarding - so much so he is the artistic director of the Altitude Festival in Meribel (French Alps). A bilingual comedy and music festival raising money for the WWF.

Marcus can be seen and heard in venues across the country delivering his award-winning stand up, on screens large and small and on Radio 4 more frequently than the shipping forecast.
